MyLynks Tutorial

Welcome to MyLynks!

MyLynks is a web-based Web-Site Organizer that is reliable and easy to use. Most importantly, it's available
Everywhere, All the time...

This tutorial will help you learn to use and configure MyLynks. It's easy, let's begin...

MyLynks 101

MyLynks Main Page

MyLynks main page is divided into 3 panes:
  • Address Entry at the top
  • Address Listing at the lower left
  • Tag Entry and Listing at the lower center
We'll ignore the Advertising pane during this tutorial

Note the layout of MyLynks. The Address List pane is intentionally placed to the left side of the page to allow you to set MyLynks to the left side of your screen. This helps you maximize screen space (even though it is contrary to the Folder/File metaphor). For more tips, see Popup description below.

MyLynks Controls

Web Address Entry

To enter a Web Address, you can type the web address into the Address text box, cut and paste the web address from your browser's address control or you can drag and drop from your browser's address control into MyLynks Address control. After entering the address, enter a friendly name for your web address and press the Add button or the enter key. Your entry will display the friendly name you entered in the Address List.

Tag Entry

Tags are used to organize your Address List into groups of Web Addresses. 3 pre-defined tags are provided and cannot be deleted:
  • ALL - lists all Addresses you've entered
  • Trash - lists the Addresses you've deleted from the ALL list
  • Public - for sharing Addresses with the general public if you so choose.

To enter a Tag, type the tag name you want into the text box just below the label Tags then press the Add button in the Tag Controls (to the right of the text box). Your tag will appear on the Tag list with a check box next to it.

Tagging Addresses

Tags are unlike folders in that the selected addresses being tagged can have multiple tags applied to them. To tag addresses, select the addresses you want tagged in the Address List by checking the checkbox next to the addresses. Then select the tags you want applied to these addresses by checking the checkbox next to the tags. Then press either Tag button - one in the Web Address Controls or the one in the Tag Controls.

Selecting A Tagged Set

Simple: just click on the Tag name and all Addresses tagged with that name will appear!

Deleting Tags and Addresses

To delete an Address from a tagged group, select the Tag group, select the address to remove from the Tag and press the Del button in the Web Address Controls group.

To delete an Address from all tagged groups, select the ALL tag, select the address to remove and press the Del button in the Web Address Controls group.

To delete a Tag, select the Tag and press the Del button in the Tag Controls. The Addresses in this tag will not be removed from any other groups in which it is also tagged.

Not Implemented Yet
  • Select All checkboxes at the top of the Address List and Tag List
  • Import - will allow importing of Favorites and Bookmarks
  • Empty - will permanently remove all Addresses tagged as Trash
  • Export - will provide exporting of your Addresses to Favorites or Bookmarks
  • Ren - may provide Renaming of an Address entry (may not implement this)
  • < - Navigates to the previous page of Addresses for the current tag
  • > - Navigates to the next page of Addresses for the current tag

Window Adjustments

MyLynks Main Page has a couple adjustments - background color and window popup display. To adjust the background color, press one of the color buttons in the Window Controls at the very botton of the page.

To display MyLynks in a popup window, thereby saving screen space, press the Popup link. If Popups are disabled on your computer, please enable them - if you can perminantly enable them for the MyLynks.net domain, this may be preferred. Once the window has opened in a popup, you can close the original browser.

Once Popups are enabled for MyLynks.net domain, you can create a shortcut to:

http://www.mylynks.net/mylynkspopup.html

and MyLynks will open as a popup in your browser from that shortcut.

If you enable popups for the MyLynks.net domain, we assure you there will be no additional popups launched from any of the MyLynks web-pages. The developers of MyLynks don't like these unwanted popups and we certainly do not want to impose them on you.
